The distribution playbook

What to measure, and what to ignore

A measurement framework for product video: match the metric to the job, separate attention from outcome, and ignore vanity signals.

Measurement starts with the job. A launch cut needs distribution and qualified interest; an onboarding walkthrough needs task completion; a sales-thread film needs a useful reply or progression. One dashboard number cannot describe all three.

A metric ladder

LayerWhat it tells youWhat it cannot tell you
DeliveryThe asset reached the playerWhether the viewer cared
AttentionWhere people stopped or replayedWhether the claim was true
UnderstandingWhether the viewer took the intended next stepWhether video caused it alone
OutcomeWhether the business or user goal movedWhy a viewer did or did not act

Set up the measurement

Measure a product video honestly

  1. Name the jobWrite the single action or understanding the film is intended to support.
  2. Choose the eventSelect the closest observable event: meaningful play, completion, click, reply, activation or assisted conversion.
  3. Instrument the contextRecord placement, audience and version. A video on a page and the same video in a sales thread are different exposures.
  4. Read the drop-offsUse starts, completion and replays to find edit problems. Treat them as clues, not as the outcome.
  5. Review the real resultCompare the intended downstream action and note other changes that could explain movement. Video rarely acts alone.

What to ignore

Ignore a high view count that comes from the wrong audience, a completion rate on a film with no next action, and a conversion claim that has no defined exposure. Precision beats a flattering number.

Questions people ask

What is the most important metric for product video?

The most important metric is the event the video is meant to influence: a qualified enquiry, a completed workflow, activation or another defined action. There is no universal best metric.

Are video views a useful metric?

Views are useful for checking distribution and delivery, but they do not prove understanding or intent. Pair them with completion, click behaviour and the relevant downstream action.

How do I measure a product video on a landing page?

Track exposure and meaningful playback, then compare the qualified action the page owns. Also check speed and accessibility so the video has not harmed the page experience.
